Red Carpet at 82! What to wear?

The Marriott, Grosvenor Square for the Awards bit, then party at the Cafe de Paris!  Me!

It is UK Blog Awards Final next Friday…and I am one of 7 Finalists in the Lifestyle Category.  That ought  to mean making a ‘lifestyle statement’  oughtn’t it?

But what to wear?

Indoctrinated by red top pictures of First Nights, visions of skirts slashed to viewpoint, coy nipples peeking and very dodgy heels?

3BBF6DBC-C6E8-4A9D-B88C-DEBFC3F5CBDF….NO!

It isnt about looking youthful or even glamorous is it?  Cant be Helen Mirren anyway,  wrong shape. But I am proud of being old. Happy to boast about it too.

The whole thing is such an amazing chance! The idea that at 82 I am going to be there.  Great message to the world!  Taking up something new at 80+ is possible.

So maybe ‘Striking’ will do?

My role model for that has to be Edith Sitwell. She created stunning amazing and very elegant outfits.

But wrong nose I think.  And I am not sure striking describes me….

The other problem is that I am mean.   Married to a Scot and brought up in the war with clothes rationing, it is ingrained.  Cant imagine going to buy something outrageously expensive for one event.  Though maybe there will be more…who knows!  And anyway, I have enough clothes to see me out…..Love that ‘old lady’ phrase.

You will gather that clothes are not a great interest of mine.  This is more me.

Am wondering if  the answer is “Vintage”.  Like the double meaning of that.  I am!

Will definitely wear this T shirt found in a vineyard in South Africa...sums up very nicely the aim of  life in Later Years.

Perhaps a bit more glamour though. A sequin or two?  Feather boa?

And then there are shoes. Ah!  Problem. No heels..no balance, especially if there is bubbly around. And comfort. Short skirts out then?

It is beginnning to take shape.  The red nails are already done, long and pointed. Love the wicked feel of them.  Make up? Some colour and a touch of sparkle somewhere?

Yes! Got it, it will be the ‘Vintage  Look’.    Many years ago in an antique shop I fell in love and bought a black velvet Edwardian Evening Cape.  Always knew there would be an occasion to wear it!  And with the toy boy looking great in Black Tie.  (Why  dont men wear them more often?)  He has a Top hat and tails too, very Fred Astaire.  Do you think that would be too much?

Beginning to feel the decision is good.  Perhaps just right for the ‘Oldest Blogger in Town’?  And making a statement about “Lifestyle at 80+”?  Do whatever what you like! It’s Bonus Years time.

What a super event to look forward to. So very lucky!

Pictures next weekend.

Many, many congrats! As you get ready for this, keep in mind that comfort is most important, since you may be standing for photos and of course, getting up and applauding. I have the same problem with shoes—would love to wear heels, but those days are long gone! By all means, wear red nail polish and some make-up…and a big smile! Good luck with this. And let us know all about it!

Congratulations Joyce! Not only did you start something new but you’re also killing it! The message you’re sending out is incredible. I know some women in their 40s and 50s who would never dream of starting something new and I find that so sad because they are missing out on so much. You’re a role model and I hope I get to you meet you tomorrow night as I’ll be there too! …Wearing a long-sleeved, full-length pink flowery dress! Maybe an option for you too? 😉
